Football equipment, especially shoulder pads, gets smelly because it absorbs your sweat while you play. Regular washing will keep bacteria and odour to a minimum. During football season, you can cut down on the frequency of cleaning to once or twice a week – as long as you allow the equipment to dry thoroughly after every practice. At the end of the season, have your shoulder pads cleaned professionally because some of the materials can’t be put into the wash.
With the following 3-step care regime, you can keep your pads in good shape:
- When you get home from practice, take them out your bag and put them in your PROlocker to dry out. Drying football equipment thoroughly is essential in reducing the growth of mould and bacteria.
- Wipe the dirt off with a damp cloth and water. After they’ve been cleaned, dry the pads with a dry cloth. To disinfect shoulder pads and remove stubborn streaks, clean with an athletic disinfectant solution or household disinfectant (make sure the label says it’s safe to use on plastic).
- As already mentioned, have the pads professionally cleaned after the season. They’ll be sanitized and reconditioned. The cushions will be removed and washed, and the shell inspected for cracks.
